Yes, it is required for ALBD service to be running on client machinesfor ClearCase to work. ALBD is how the ClearCase client and serverprocesses communicate with each other.

There is a rare exception onWindows if you have a 'client-only' install and are just storing asnapshot view on the machine (view server process running on a differentmachine). I doubt this is your case.Regarding your error msg, looks to me like there are issues with thegroup permissions of the albd user account. This would explain why the.hostname file couldn't be updated.

You host VOBs on the machine2). You host Views on the machine. In your case, if views used by Developers are to be created on theirlocal machines, then ALBD.must.

Unknown style permissions' usually mean that the disk drive on whichyou are trying to create the views is not of type NTFS. Is this an attempt to create a local or remote view? You need to make sure that your albd service account has local admin rights on your ClearCase registry server and make sure that this account in your ClearCase Admin group. Finally and probably most importantly, ensure that the albd account is in your registry servers's Backup Operators group. This can be found by checking My Computer Manage local Users and Groups Backup Operators. This should prevent the service from stopping as policies in Active Direcrory can cause albd service to stop. From the error message, the most likely cause of this problem is that either the albd service is not setup correctly (it is not using the right domain account), or that the domain account the albd service is running under is not setup per Rational's requirements (that the account must be a member of the ClearCase Administrators group). For more information, you should refer to the Rational ClearCase Administrator's Guide. It's only going to work properly as a domain acct. Here's what I see ifI check my setup. The error message seems to be clear enough.
It is indicating that yourALBD Service Account is not a member of the 'clearcase' or an equivalentClearCase Administrative Group in your domain. Add te ALBD serviceaccount to this group and the problem should be solved. If such a group does not exist, then create the group and make the ALBDaccount a member of the group.
I suggest you run the 'ClearCase Doctor' on that machine. After the analysis, you will find somewhere the name of the clearcase group andthe name of your claercasealbd account. Then check if this account is member of the clearcase group. If the specified account is not member of the specified group, then you havethe solution for your problem. If the specified account seems to be member of that group, then the only causeI can think of, is that the account or group mentioned is not from the correctDomain.
